NMPS 2008 CONFERENCE

Letter from the President

The New Mexico Professional Surveyor’s Annual Conference will be held on March 14th and 15th at the Marriott Pyramid Hotel in Albuquerque. The theme of this year’s conference will be “Back To Basics”, emphasizing the legal basis of our duties as licensed land surveyors. Our headline speakers will be the nationally prominent Wendy Lathrop and Jerry Broadus of Cadastral Consultants, Inc.  Wendy will be presenting “Elevation Certificates, Then and Now” on Friday morning and “Record Research – Paper verses Ground Truth” on Friday afternoon.  Jerry will be presenting on Saturday, March 15th and his topics will be “Legal Issues Important to Surveyors working with  a) Metes and Bounds Descriptions (morning) and  b) the Public Lands System (afternoon)”. Bill Stone of NGS will be presenting two hours each morning on various important aspects of the NGS program including the latest activities of the Height Modernization Working Group.  Glen Thurow will present a two hour program each day on the prototype Survey mapping and control (SUMAC) database, a web based application providing a repository for survey coordinates collected to support maintenance of the PLSS in New Mexico. In addition, a four hour ethics class will be offered each day to enable surveyors to satisfy their PDH license renewal requirements.  As usual, all of our fine vendors will be presenting their products and services throughout the conference. Attendance at both days of the 2008 Conference will cost $275 for members and $400 for non-members.  One day will be $200 for members and $300 for non-members.  All of the above fees are for early registration which cuts off February 29th, 2008.   For any registrations received with a postmark later than February 29th or for at door registration, add $25.00.  There are also reduced fees for Technicians, Interns, and Students.  They are respectively (1 day/2 day) $100/$175 for both Technicians and Interns and $50/$75 for Students.

There is a block of rooms reserved for members at the Marriott for those of you that would like to stay there.  When you make your reservation tell them you are with the NMPS for discounted rates.  You must make your reservation by February 8, 2008 to receive the discounted fee. We also invite all our conference attendees to join us for a sirloin steak and salmon dinner on Friday evening at the Marriott.  The price will be an additional $40 per person (you may bring your spouse or date) above the conference cost and can be paid for with your registration form.  We have to give the Marriott a guaranteed attendance number by March 10th so please get your reservation in early.
